How low can we go to aim high? This season we added another heritage textile, khadi cloth. Made famous by Gandhi's support for traditional arts, khadi is a hand-loomed fabric. Not only does it require immense skill to produce, it comes in a huge variety of thicknesses and textures.
The human-powered nature of khadi means less use of fossil fuels to produce the fabric, making it a low-impact choice. Using organic cotton reduces pesticide load, and dyeing with nontoxic colors brings it even further to the eco-friendly end of the spectrum.
The texture, weight, and drape of khadi worked like a dream for our pants. High quality makes the difference, and when producers are fairly paid they can focus on the feel, function, and structure of the textile. Old traditions can produce remarkably modern results.
